Baby Food 101

First foods for my baby.

Coming from someone extremely passionate about gut health and nourishment.

For many years I severely suffered with giardia, IBS, mental health disorders, and disordered eating thus, I take the responsibility of developing my daughter’s gut structure very seriously.

Unlike our brain our gut’s structure fully develops by the age of 3. That structure is the environment where most of the serotonin in the body is produced.

I am not perfect, though from my lived experience and extensive research the two nourishment principles I am most passionate about are balancing blood sugar and maintaining the integrity of the gut lining.

These are the first foods that I introduced to my daughter after breastmilk,

  • Meat Stock

    • We do beef and chicken. She drinks it out of a bottle, cup with a straw, and an open cup.

  • Egg Yolks

    • I place eggs in boiling water for 6.5 minutes and then I place the eggs in an ice bath then peal and serve the yolk to my daughter.

  • Bone Marrow

    • I buy pasture raised bone marrow bones from a local butcher. I broil them for 10 minutes at 400F. Then I smear some of the warm marrow in front of her or feed her with a spoon.

  • Fully steamed carrots blended with meat stock.

    • I cut up carrots and place them in boil water until fully cooked and super soft. I then drain the water and add meat stock and use an immersion blender to fully blend the veggies. I will save a bit for the next few days and I will also portion it into little containers and freeze for later.

  • Fully steamed peas blended with meat stocks.

    • I place frozen peas in boiling water until fully cooked and super soft. I then drain the water and add meat stock and use an immersion blender to fully blend the veggies. I will save a bit for the next few days and I will also portion it into little containers and freeze for later.

  • Roasted sweet potato. I will often feed her the inside of a sweet potato with an egg yolk.

I also give my baby large pieces of avocado, banana, carrot, celery, and cucumber. She plays with them and practices feeding herself.

I share this to give ideas other than advertised baby food. I desire to help parents feel confident in the nourishment of their children.

This is not to create shame for what is available to you.

We all deserve to be nourished.
