Learning to Chew while my Daughter takes her First Bite of Food
Sitting in bed just a few hours after giving birth to Penelope I remember hearing clearly and adamantly,
“CHEW YOUR FOOD”
I deeply heard that I MUST NOURISH MYSELF and make the nutrients AVAILABLE for me. My body just worked so hard for so many hours and now I am creating milk, my daughter’s first nourishment. I didn’t have extra energy to digest my food. I needed to use all of my faculties, including my teeth in order to thrive as a Mother.
Breastfeeding has created the most intense hunger and thirst like nothing I have experienced. Many times I want to gulp my water and swallow my food to feed. Also, when I just made food and it’s still hot and Penelope is crying to eat I find myself eating quickly.
I want my daughter to see her mother regulated while she nourishes herself. I want her to see me thanking my food, looking at it, salivating, expressing excitement and experiencing joy and pleasure in my nourishment.
